How to Add Close Friends on Instagram

Published April 23, 2024

Instagram lets you share moments and stories with a broad audience. That is nice, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. Unless you’re on a private account, anyone visiting your profile can see all your posts and stories. That means your posts are not just for your followers but for all two billion active users Instagram has.

Faced with this information, you should create a more intimate space for private content. That is where Close Friends comes in. This feature lets you share stories with a curated list of followers, fostering a sense of exclusivity for them while giving you some much-needed privacy.

Here, we’ll show you how to add close friends on Instagram, helping you build a space for more personal posts.

Understanding the Close Friends Feature

Close Friends allows you to create a custom list of followers who can see some of your exclusive content. Close Friends stories will come with a green circle around your profile picture whenever you post them and will only show up for people on that list.

There are many advantages to using the Close Friends feature. They include:

  • Enhanced Privacy: Close Friends lets you share behind-the-scenes glimpses and personal updates with a select group. That ensures that no one else can see those posts.
  • Closer Connection: Sharing with a smaller group might encourage more personal interaction and replies to your Close Friends stories.
  • Tailored Content: Create content specifically for your closest followers, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

How to Make Your Selection

Adding close friends on Instagram is a straightforward process. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Access Your Profile: Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile picture in the bottom right corner to access your profile page.
  2. Navigate to the Settings and Activity Menu: Tap on the hamburger menu icon in the top right corner of your profile page to open the Settings and Activity menu.
  3. Select “Close Friends”: From the menu, choose the option labeled “Close Friends.”
  4. Build Your List: On the Close Friends screen, you’ll see a list of your followers. Tap on the circle next to the names of the followers you want to add to your Close Friends list. You can search for specific followers using the search bar at the top of the screen.
  5. Save Your Changes: Once you’ve added your desired followers, tap the “Done” button at the bottom to save your Close Friends list.

Sharing Close Friends Stories

Now you’ve created your Close Friends list, here’s how to share content specifically with them.

Open your Instagram app and capture your story like you usually do. After doing all your edits, before sharing your story, look for the “Close Friends” button next to the “Your Story” button at the bottom of the screen and tap on it. That shares your story exclusively with your curated list.

Close Friends offers a valuable tool for creating a more intimate space on Instagram. By implementing it properly, you can cultivate a closer connection with a select group of followers.
