How to Add Collaborator on Instagram After Posting

Published February 23, 2024

Tagging or mentioning other users in an Instagram post is a fun way to connect and share. Instagram recently added another feature where you can add a collaborator to your post, otherwise known as an Instagram Collab.

This type of post not only shows up on your tagged page, but it shows up in the other collaborator’s feed. What if you wanted to add a collaborator, but you forgot and it’s been posted? Unfortunately, you cannot add a collaborator on Instagram after posting.

What is an Instagram Collab Post?

An Instagram Collab post is content you create while collaborating with other Instagram users. It’s a great way to boost your engagement if you’ve seen a drop in comments and shares. Essentially, it’s when two creators publish the same post and it shows up in both of their feeds.

The posts will share likes, comments, engagement stats and audiences. Typically, collaborators are added to a post before it’s published. You’ll then see both user’s names at the top with links to their profiles. The idea is that you’ll be expanding your reach from your own network to the network of the collaborator.

How is a Collab Different From Being Tagged in a Post?

You may be wondering how an Instagram Collab is different from simply tagging someone in a post. When you’re tagged or mentioned in a post, it won’t be shared with your followers. Users can tag or mention anyone in a post, but you have to approve a collaboration invitation.

Why Should I Add a Collaborator to an Instagram Post?

There are several reasons that adding a collaborator to an Instagram post can be beneficial. You can start with your friends, and expand to other accounts that may have an audience you’d like to see your content.

Instagram Collab posts are mutually beneficial. You’ll be able to expand your reach to another audience, and so does the collaborator. This will likely increase engagement for you both, and help you build new relationships, and receive credit for posts.

Can I Add a Collaborator on Instagram After Posting?

If you’ve already published an Instagram post and forgot to add a collaborator, no, you cannot add one. The only way to do so is to delete the post entirely and add them when you post again. If you don’t want to do this, you can use a few workarounds that have a similar effect as an Instagram Collab post.

Ask Them to Share it on Their Feed

When you don’t want to repost content to add a collaborator, you can always message them and ask them to post it on their feed. You may also have to make sure they tag you, so you also get credit since your username won’t be at the top with theirs.

Tag the Collaborator in the Post

As we mentioned, you can’t add a collaborator after posting, but you can tag them or mention them in the caption. That way the post will show up on their tagged page.

Ask Them to Share the Post on Their Story

You can also message the person you wanted to collaborate with and see if they’ll share it in their story. That way, you are still getting exposure to their audience.

Delete the Post and Add Them

If you really want this person to be shown as a collaborator on your post, the only way to do this is to delete it and post it again. Make sure you are paying attention and that you do add them as a collaborator. Keep in mind that they will have to accept your invitation for their name to show up in your post.

 Conclusion

The bottom line is that you cannot add a collaborator to an Instagram post after posting. The best you can do is ask them to share the post independently, or delete yours and post again with the collab added. Instagram Collab posts are a great way to expand your reach, so they’re worth trying out.
