How to Comment GIFs on Instagram

Published February 5, 2024

If you have used other social media platforms like Twitter, Telegram, Discord, or some others, then you already know the power of communication and expression when using GIFs. These mini video clips in picture format are an excellent way to elevate your conversations with your friends, fans, and others.

Prior to the introduction of GIFs, you could only reply to others using tax or emojis, although it was possible to reply to Stories using GIFs.

How to comment GIFs on Instagram? It’s actually quite easy.

Read on to learn how you can do it on any device, how to delete GIF comments, and troubleshooting issues you may come up against.

How to Comment GIF on Instagram

If you want to reply with a GIF on Instagram, you simply need to do the following:

  1. Open your Instagram
  2. Go to a post you want to comment on and tap on the GIF button on the bottom-right, next to the comment box.
  3. Search for the GIF you would like to comment with from Instagram’s massive GIF repository
  4. Tap on the GIF you would like to comment with

Your GIF comment will appear immediately after you finish with your GIF selection. Everyone will be able to see your fun addition to the comments section under a post.

A GIF comment is not always the best way to comment on a post, but when it fits, it could convey a lot more expression and emotion than a standard text comment could.

Note: Instagram’s massive GIF library is possible thanks to being powered by GIPHY, an online GIF repository used elsewhere prior to being integrated into Instagram.

Also, it is not possible to reply to another GIF comment at this time. More on that later.

How to Delete a GIF Comment

What do you do if you decide you no longer want the GIF you selected as your comment? Perhaps you picked the wrong one accidentally, thought a different GIF would be more suitable, or changed your mind and don’t want to leave any comment anymore. Whatever your reason for wanting to delete a GIF comment, it is easy to do.

Do the following:

  • Locate your GIF comment
  • Tap on it and hold for a brief moment
  • Select the Trash can icon to delete it

After you follow these steps, your GIF comment will be deleted.

How to Comment GIF on Instagram on a Computer

The gotcha currently is that unfortunately, it is not possible to leave GIF comments using Instagram’s web browser version, which is how you would access the platform on a computer.

Currently, the only way you can post GIFs in the comments section of posts is on a smartphone (iPhone or Android).

Instagram GIF Comment Troubleshooting

Are you having issues with leaving GIF comments?

The most common issue users have is that they do not see the GIF option when they want to comment on an Instagram post. If this is the case for you, then it simply means that your IG app is out of date.

The fix is to update your Instagram to the latest version. This is because the older versions of the app did not yet have the GIF comment feature. Android users will need to head to the Play Store while iPhone users need to launch the App Store.

Once you have updated your Instagram app, you will be able to post all of the GIF comments you desire.

Leaving GIF Comments on Other Comments

You may sometimes want to reply to someone’s comment under a post with a GIF comment. However, as great as this feature would be, it is currently not possible to do. Users are only able to currently post a GIF comment as a direct comment to the post they are commenting on.

Using GIFs From Your Phone

You may have a great collection of GIFs you have saved on your phone that you would like to use. However, Instagram also currently does not allow GIFs from user devices to be used as comments. Only the GIPHY-supplied GIFs within Instagram’s library can be posted as comments for now.
