How to Create a Group Chat on Instagram

Published April 8, 2024

Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing platform to a vibrant hub for connection. There are many different avenues for people to connect on the app, and one major route is the Group Chats.

Group chats are a key Instagram feature that lets you connect with multiple friends or followers simultaneously. It’s a lot like a conference call, where three or more users can interact on the same chat screen instead of a conversation between two parties.

Giving Your Group Chat a Name

While not mandatory, adding a name to your group chat can make it easier for your friends to identify it. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Access the Group Chat: Tap the group chat you created in your Direct Messages list.

  4. Save Changes: Tap “Done” to save the new group name.

Communicating in the Group Chat: What Can You Do?

Once your group chat is set up, the fun can now begin. These Group Chats are as feature-rich as the direct messages, so you can do all you can in a direct chat. Things like:

  • Sharing Media: Like individual chats, you can share photos, videos, stories, and even live videos within the group chat.
  • Reacting to Messages: You can react with emojis by tapping and holding a message. A menu of emoji options will appear, allowing you to “like,” “love,” “laugh,” and more.
  • Responding with GIFs: Add a touch of humor or personality by inserting GIFs into your messages using the GIPHY search button next to the media button.
  • Using Direct Replies: For focused conversation threads within the group chat, tap and hold on to a specific message and select “Reply” to address the sender and maintain a conversation flow.
