Instagram is a great place to build a community, but sometimes that same community can be a pain. While you’re amassing engaged followers and interesting friends, you also have the pleasure of meeting a few bad eggs in the mix.
By ‘bad eggs’, we mean the spammers, trolls, haters, and frankly, anyone who is out to make your experience on Instagram a terrible one. Those people will come at a certain point with unwanted comments below your posts, but it’s great that Instagram thought of that.
On Instagram, your comment section is yours to curate. You can hide and delete comments you don’t like or even turn off the comments outright. In this article, we’ll show you how it’s done.
How to Hide a Comment on Instagram
There are a few ways you can limit the visible comments that are shown below your posts.
- You can hide individual comments: This works when the number of comments to hide is few. This is a manual method of hiding comments singly.
- You can automatically filter certain words: If you expect a large amount of trolling, this can be for you. In this method, Instagram automatically filters comments to hide based on the presence of offensive words, or certain custom words set up by you.
Here’s how to go about them:
How to Hide a Single Comment
- Navigate to the comment you want to hide.
- Swipe left on the comment, or tap and hold the comment to reveal a menu.
- Select “Hide” from the menu that appears.
- With this, you’ve hidden the comment.
How to Turn on Automatic Comment Filtering
- Open your app and tap on the profile photo at the bottom right of the screen. This will open your profile.
- Tap on the hamburger menu icon at the top right of the page. This will open the profile menu.
- Click on “Settings and Privacy”.
- Scroll down to the “How others can interact with you” section and tap on Hidden Words.
- On this screen, click on “Advanced comment filtering, to turn it on. This feature will help you ensure your comment section is free from any issues.
How to Set up Automatic Custom Word Filtering
If Instagram’s methods of rooting trolls out are too pedestrian for you, you can curate your list. This will help the filtering algorithm do its job better. Here’s how to set it up:
- Get to the profile by tapping the profile photo at the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap on the hamburger menu icon at the top right of the page. This will open the profile menu.
- Click on “Settings and Privacy”.
- Scroll down to the “Custom words for messages and comments” section and tap on “Manage custom words and phrases.”
- Here, you enter all the words you want out of your comment section. Do ensure to separate each entry with a comma. Once this list is done, you can say goodbye to all those words in your comments.
Now you know all these tips, you can curate the visible comments under your post with ease. Say goodbye to trolls and negative comments, and say hello to a better Instagram.
