How to Know if Someone Blocked You on TikTok

Published August 8, 2024

TikTok has quickly become one of the most popular social media apps globally. This means it’s likely that people you know are on TikTok as well. However, what do you do when you look up someone who you believe has an account but you cannot find them? In this article, we will go over how to know if someone blocked you on TikTok.

Methods for How to Know if Someone Blocked You on TikTok

Whenever someone else blocks you, TikTok is not going to send you any notifications that it has occurred. Instead, you are going to take a few steps manually to determine whether you were blocked by another user.

The following are a few of the methods you can use to see if someone has blocked you on TikTok:

Method #1: Search for a Profile

If you suspect someone has blocked you, then an easy way to verify this is to see if you can view their profile. To do this you will need to either know their username or ID.

Simply search for one of these in the app’s search field. If you are not seeing their account come up, then you can be pretty certain that they have blocked you. However, it is not entirely guaranteed this is the case, which means you should also check on TikTok Web.

Method #2: Lookup a Profile on TikTok Web

If you are not pulling up the account in question within the app, it could mean one of three things:

  • The user has banned you
  • The user account has been deleted
  • The user has made their profile private

To determine which one of these is true, you will have to switch over to a web browser. Then, follow this format when typing in their username into the URL field:

tiktok.com/@username

Replace “username” with their actual username. Then, go to that page.

If once on that page you see a message that says “Couldn’t find this account” then the account has been deleted or does not exist.

If, however, you see a message saying “No content” then you have been blocked by that user.

Also, it helps to know that if the page has a message that says “This account is private” then it means the user has made their profile private but has not blocked you.

Method #3: View Your DMs

Another method you can use to check if someone on TikTok banned you is to head to your DM inbox. This strategy works because if someone blocked you and you already have DMs with them, you will see a telltale sign they blocked you.

Note: This method requires you to have already had messages sent and received between you and the other person.

First, head to the Inbox tab and scroll down. If you notice “Account not found” anywhere, this is a sign that you were blocked by someone. However, it is also a possibility that they have just deleted their account, which is why we recommend using another method to verify whether you were blocked or not.

Method #4: View Post Comments

If the person in question has previously commented on your videos, you would be able to see if they blocked you by going through the comments.

If you look through the comments of a video you know they commented on, yet do not see their comments anymore, this means they may have blocked you.

Method #5: Review Your Follower and Following Lists

Another way to see if someone blocked you is to look at your Follower and Following lists. If they have previously followed you, or you followed them, you will no longer see their username on those lists.

As with the other methods, there is always a chance that they have deleted their account, which is why their username does not show up on one of the lists. This is why it is a good idea to verify with another method that does not involve being logged into your account.

Bonus Method: Viewing From Another Account

An easy foolproof way to double check whether someone has blocked you is to use another account.

Simply log into another account other than the one you believe was blocked. Then, search for the username of that person. If you can find their profile, then they have indeed blocked you and have not deleted their account.

What You Can Do if Someone Blocked You on TikTok

Once you have confirmed that someone you suspected to have blocked you did in fact do so, you have a few options.

You can either accept that they blocked you and most likely do not want to communicate with you. Alternatively, if it is causing you distress, you can consider contacting them on another platform or mode of communication.

Approach without being too forceful or intense, and try to understand why they decided to block you. Stay respectful and avoid accusing them of anything. After all, you will not know the whole story unless they share it with you. Also, you will need to comply with TikTok’s community guidelines and avoid any conflicts with another person on the platform.

Protip: It is never 100% accurate to believe someone definitely blocked you with any method. For that, the other person would have to directly inform you they have done so. However, you can claim a high degree of certainty that someone has blocked you when you use one of the above methods.

Blocked Vs Private and Deactivated Accounts

There are three reasons why you are unable to view someone’s profile on TikTok:

  • The user account has blocked you
  • The user account has been deactivated/deleted
  • The user account has been made private

It could be a bit misleading if you do not immediately find the account you believe blocked you. This is where due diligence comes in, and further investigation is required. Avoid jumping to conclusions and instead gather as much evidence as you can.

Conclusion

Now that you have learned how to know if someone blocked you on TikTok, you can verify if that is what happened. Sometimes, someone simply deactivated their profile or went private. However, someone may have indeed blocked you. In those cases, decide whether to respect their decision without any further action on your part, or reach out to them and politely inquire as to why they have done so.
