How to Mention Someone on Instagram in a Comment
When you tag someone in a comment it is considered to be a mention.
Mentioning another account in the comments section is helpful to bring attention to the post or the conversation happening within the comments.
After you mention someone in the comments, you will see their IG username displayed. Additionally, they will get a notification that allows them to easily get to the post and your comment.
To mention someone on Instagram in a comment, do the following:
- Tap in the Add a comment field in the comments section
- Write the @ symbol followed by the username of the account you want to mention (you will see a list of accounts that may reduce your need to write out the entire username)
- Add your comment after the username has been tagged
- Tap the Post or Arrow Button to submit your comment
Protip: You are allowed to pin up to 3 comments on your posts if you want to have the comments at the top of the entire comments section.
How to Tag Someone on Instagram in a Post
Do you have a post where a friend is featured or is connected to in some way? If so, you may want to tag them in that post.
A tagged username will essentially create a link to that username’s profile.
Here are the steps to tag someone in a post:
- Create your Instagram post
- Adjust the filter options and tap Next
- Tap the Tag people option and tap on it and tap on the post to pull up a search bar where you can search for a username to tag
- Add the usernames of the accounts you wish to tag, adjusting its placement within the post
- Tap Done in the top-right of the screen
- Tap Done again
How to Tag Someone on Instagram After Posting
If you decide that you want to tag someone after you have already created a post, you can also do that. Here is what to do if you want to tag an account in a post that already exists:
- Open the post and tap on the three dots in the top-right of the post and then tap Edit
- In Edit Mode, go to the bottom-left of the post to find the Tag people option and tap on it
- Tap on the post to pull up a search bar where you can search for a username to tag
- Add the usernames of the accounts you wish to tag, adjusting its placement within the post
- Tap Done in the top-right of the screen
- Tap Done again
How to Tag a Person in Stories
You can tag and mention another account in your Stories as well.
There are two ways to tag someone in a Story:
- Sticker
- @ Symbol
Mentions via the Tag Sticker
Tagging someone using the Tag Sticker option is the more fun way to mention another account. This will create a colorful tag that others can tap on to be taken to the tagged account.
Follow these steps to use a Tag Sticker:
- Tap the + icon slightly overlaying your profile photo in the top-right of your IG feed page.
- Create a Story by adding a photo or video from your phone and tap Done
- Tap the sticker icon at the top of the screen and select the @MENTION sticker
- Begin typing the username of the account you wish to mention and tap on the profile picture once it appears
- Relocate the Tag Sticker to your preferred location and resize it as you desire
- Tap the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen and then tap the Share button, followed by tapping the Done button

The second method of tagging someone in posts is by using the @ symbol. Here is how you can do that:
- Tap the + icon slightly overlaying your profile photo in the top-right of your IG feed page.
- Create a Story by adding a photo or video from your phone and tap Done
- Tap on the screen and add the @ symbol to begin typing an account username
- Select the username you wish to have tagged in the post
