How to Turn off Instagram Notifications

Published May 4, 2024

Instagram notifications can be helpful in many situations, but too many will render them increasingly useless. Being pinged every few minutes with a new notification may lead you to start ignoring them entirely. If you want to learn how to turn off Instagram notifications, then keep reading. We will go over both how to turn them off on Android as well as iOS.

How to Turn off Instagram Notifications on Android

Notifications for Instagram can be disabled from both the IG app and your device’s settings. Here is how to disable push notifications from popping up on your Android phone from Instagram:

  1. Go to Apps on your phone and tap on Instagram
  2. Head to the Notifications section and tap on the Block all option

From here, you will have a few options when it comes to what you can disable, and how.

  1. To mute all of IG’s notifications silently, you will want to enable Activate Show.
  2. To view IG notifications on your phone’s lock screen tap the lock screen.
  3. To turn off all notifications on the lock screen select Don’t show notifications at all.
  4. To receive IG notifications in Do Not Disturb mode, enable Override Do Not Disturb.

How to Turn off Notifications on iOS

You can disable notifications on iOS devices easily as well. Here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Tap on the Settings icon
  2. Scroll down to Notifications and tap on it
  3. Scroll until you find Instagram and tap it
  4. Toggle the notifications on

If you want to prevent push messages without turning them off entirely, you can disable sounds on your phone to mute notifications.

Turn off IG Notifications Within the App

Another helpful way to disable Instagram notifications is by doing so directly from within the app itself. This allows you to turn off every IG notification at once.

Note: This option will disable all IG notifications from between 15 minutes and 8 hours.

Here is how you can disable notifications from within the app:

  1. From your profile page, tap on the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right of the screen
  2. Tap on Notifications
  3. Toggle Pause all mode on by moving the tick to the right
  4. Select the amount of time you would like to pause push notifications for

Partially Disable Notifications

You can also disable some notifications from your profile page. These include notifications for:

  • Posts
  • Stories
  • Live Videos

Additionally, you are able to silence push notifications for:

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Followers

If you would like to disable just some notifications, you can do the following:

  1. Open the hamburger menu again
  2. Scroll down to Notifications and tap it
  3. Select the specific push notifications you would like to disable

Once you have done this, you will no longer get updated on engagement with your account for its content until the timer has expired.

Mute New Content Notifications

You can also mute notifications for new content that someone else shares. This includes:

  • Posts
  • Stories
  • Live Videos

To disable these notifications, do the following:

  1. Go to the user profile you would like to disable notifications for
  2. Tap the bell icon in the top-right of the screen
  3. Disable all of the notifications for the specific content types you no longer wish to see

Conclusion

Instagram notifications can become excessive if you don’t disable some of them. Now that you know how to turn off Instagram notifications, you can avoid the common issue of being overwhelmed by notifications. Instead of taking drastic measures like unfollowing other accounts, you can simply disable either some notifications, or all of them.
