How to Untag Yourself on Instagram

Published March 18, 2024

Your posts on social media paint a picture of who you are. This picture can attract or repel potential connections, which is why brands ensure that only their best feet are put forward on social media.

Most brands and creators have well-curated content on the pages that are designed to attract potential customers. These painstaking efforts can be damaged by a single unexpected and unwanted tagged photo.

On Instagram, posts you are tagged in are displayed on your profile in the ‘Photos of You’ section, which means that all your followers can see that unflattering post with you in it.

While you can’t completely erase a photo from Instagram if you’re not the one who posted it, you have several options to manage its presence on your profile. Let’s go over some ways to untag yourself from Instagram photos.

Untagging Yourself From a Single Post

  1. Find the Photo: Open the Instagram app and navigate to your profile by clicking on your profile photo on the bottom right of the page. Tap on the “Photos of You” section and locate the photo you want to untag yourself from.
  2. Access Options: Tap on the photo to open it fully. Once open, tap on the three-dot icon in the top right corner.
  3. Click on Tag options: On the popup menu that appears, click on ‘Tag Options’.
  4. Choose ‘Remove me from post’: A menu will appear. Select the option ‘Remove me from Post.’ This removes your username completely from the photo, making it invisible on your profile.
  5. Undo Window: Instagram doesn’t give you a confirmation option, but there’s a quick window where you can click the undo button if you change your mind.

How to Untag Multiple Photos at Once

If multiple photos on your profile deserve this treatment, you can repeat the earlier steps for each of them, but there’s a quicker way to do it. We’ll show you.

  1. Get to your profile on the Instagram app and click on the hamburger menu icon at the top right of the page.
  2. Click on “My Activity” on the menu that pops up.
  3. On this menu, click on “Tags”. This will display all the posts you’ve been tagged in. You can now select all that you want to remove.
  4. Once done selecting, you can untag them by clicking on “Remove” at the bottom. Tap “Remove” again to confirm your decision, and those photos will be removed from your profile.

A Few Things to Note About Untagging

  1. Limited Control: Remember, untagging only affects your profile, not the original post. The photo remains visible on the profile of the person who posted it.
  2. Future Visibility is Compromised: If you ever want the photo to appear on your profile again, you’ll need to be re-tagged by the original poster. So, consider hiding it instead.
  3. Privacy Settings: You can adjust your privacy settings to prevent unwanted tags in the future. Go to your profile, tap on the three horizontal lines, and select “Settings and Privacy.”

Scroll down on the list to “Tags and Mentions” and click on it.

Here, you can choose to “Manually Approve Tags” before they appear on your profile. This allows you to review any future tags and decide whether to accept them or not.

By understanding how to manage your tagged photos, you can curate your online presence and ensure your profile reflects what you want to share with others. We wish you the best.
