How to Turn on Captions on TikTok

Published março 12, 2025

Since 2021, TikTok has built in a feature that auto-adds captions on videos you play while on the app. It does this using advanced AI that converts voice into text. If you want to see the words being spoken by a creator on the screen, you can easily turn captions on. However, not everyone knows how to do this. In this article, we will show you how to turn on captions on TikTok.

What Are TikTok Captions?

Captions on TikTok videos, also called auto captions, are automatically-generated words that appear on a video that are being spoken by the person in the video. Auto captions are essentially text-to-speech, and allow users to engage with a video and understand what is being conveyed even without having the sound on.

TikTok’s auto captions can be generated in several languages, including:

  • Inglês
  • Italian
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Portuguese
  • Indonésia
  • Korean
  • Mandarin
  • Turkish

The popular social media platform has hinted that additional languages will have the possibility to have auto captions enabled.

Captions appear on a video right above a creator’s username while you are watching a TikTok. They are handy when you are in a location where you are unable to have the volume turned up on your phone, or when you want to have an easier time understanding what the creator is saying.

Observação: Auto-generated captions are not always perfectly accurate, which means there may be some transcription errors. However, creators can modify captions to remove these errors.

Why Captions Have Become Popular on TikTok

Auto-generated captions have become immensely popular ever since they made their debut on TikTok. This is due to the convenience they offer, where videos can be left on silent while still being viewable without not knowing what is happening in them.

Captions have also made TikTok a much more inclusive social media platform, enabling people who are deaf or have difficulty hearing well to enjoy TikTok videos. This both helps those who would otherwise be unable to enjoy video content to get the most out of it, while also helping expand the app’s user base.

How to Turn on Captions on TikTok

If you want to get started with auto captions, you can easily enable them on videos you create or watch. We will go over how you can both enable and disable captions in a couple of different ways.

Enabling and Disabling Captions in the Feed

When the auto captions feature is available in your region, you should receive a pop-up message letting you know captions are available. It will also provide you with the option to enable captions by tapping on Turn on Captions. After you have enabled them, they will stay enabled until you disable them in your Settings.

To enable captions, you can also tap the captions icon located on the left-hand side of the screen, next to the video details. Once you do this, auto-generated captions will start showing.

To disable captions, simply tap on the captions while they appear and tap Hide captions.

Enabling and Disabling Captions in the Settings

Another way to turn on auto captions for Tiktok videos is by going directly into your account settings. Simply follow these steps to enable them:

  1. Abra o Aplicativo TikTok no seu celular
  2. Toque no seu ícone de perfil na parte inferior da tela
  3. Toque no menu de hambúrguer (three horizontal lines) at the top of the screen
  4. Toque em Configurações e privacidade
  5. Toque em Display
  6. Role para baixo até o Acessibilidade area and enable Captions by moving the tick

That’s all there is to it. Captions will now be enabled on videos.

Disabling captions is as easy as turning them on. If you find that there are too many inaccuracies within the captions, or simply find them too distracting after a while, you can undo enabling them. Take the following steps:

  1. Abra o Aplicativo TikTok no seu celular
  2. Toque no seu Foto do perfil na parte inferior da tela
  3. Toque no menu de hambúrguer (three horizontal lines) at the top of the screen
  4. Toque em Configurações e privacidade
  5. Toque em Display
  6. Role para o Acessibilidade area and move the tick to disable the captions

You can always return if you have changed your mind and turn captions on again.

Conclusão

Now that you know how to turn on captions on Tiktok, you can start benefiting from having them on videos as others have been doing since their debut a few years ago. If you ever decide you no longer wish to see captions, simply disable them.
