What Does BBC Mean on TikTok?

Published August 7, 2024

Slangs and acronyms are tossed around so much on social media platforms like TikTok that it can be difficult to understand posts without proper orientation. From ASMR to POV, trying to understand TikTok videos nowadays can be quite tough.

The acronym “BBC” has taken on a life of its own on TikTok. The most obvious interpretation of this acronym is the British Broadcasting Corporation, but if you thought that you’re very wrong. The meaning of that acronym on the platform is quite different.

The TikTok Meaning of Bbc

On TikTok, “BBC” is a slang term that stands for “Big Black Cock.” It’s a sexually suggestive term that has gained traction due to the platform’s algorithm and user engagement. But here’s the thing: the acronym being used for that term didn’t begin with TikTok.

The exact origin of the term “BBC” is difficult to pinpoint, but it is believed to have emerged in online forums and chat rooms in the 1990s. The rise of the internet and the anonymity it provided facilitated the creation and spread of such slang.

Pornography also played a significant role in popularizing the term “BBC.” The industry often employs explicit language and terminology to cater to specific audiences, and the use of “BBC” became very popular to describe content featuring Black male performers. This contributed to the wide spread of the term.

The Impact of Social Media on Language

The rapid spread of slang terms like “BBC” shows just how influential social media is on language evolution. Platforms like TikTok facilitate the creation and spread of new words and phrases, often at a remarkable speed, and to younger audiences. While some of these terms are harmless and even humorous, others, like “BBC,” can be offensive or inappropriate.

Filtering Videos With BBC From Your Feed

If you aren’t a fan of this term and would rather not encounter it on your scrolls through TikTok, you can make that happen. The TikTok app allows for this to be possible with the “Filter Video Keywords” feature.

This feature flags videos that contain certain offensive words in their descriptions or stickers, and removes them from your feed so you don’t have to see them. Here’s how it works:

  • Head over to your profile by tapping on the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  • Tap on the hamburger menu icon at the top right of the screen to open the popup menu.
  • Tap on “Settings and Privacy.”
  • Search for “Content Preferences” and tap on it.
  • Tap on “Filter Video Keywords.”
  • Tap on “Add Keyword.” This will open up a screen for you to type in the keyword you wish to be filtered, and the parts of TikTok you want it filtered from. Select from your For You, following, LIVE, friends pages, or all of them.
  • Once you’re satisfied, click on ”Save” at the top right, and you’re done.

Conclusion

The “BBC” term is just one example of how online platforms can contribute to the spread of explicit and potentially harmful content. It’s crucial to be aware of the language used on social media and to protect oneself and others from exposure to inappropriate material.
