What happens When You Block Someone on Instagram?

Published March 9, 2024

With over 2.4 billion users on Instagram to interact with, you may not always have a positive experience. There may also be users on the platform from your personal life that you may not want to have access to your social media accounts. This is why Instagram gives you the option to block other accounts.

Blocking someone on Instagram results in an immediate action that leads to them not being able to access your account. Let’s talk about what happens when you block someone on Instagram on your end as well as the blocked user.

The Immediate Effects

First, the most noticeable effect of blocking someone on Instagram is that your accounts will be disconnected. The user you block will no longer be able to view your profile, posts or stories. They also won’t be able to message you, or see that your account exists. It will appear as if you deleted your account. On your end, you won’t be able to see their account either and it will appear deleted.

Direct Messages (DMs)

Another area you’ll notice change is in your direct messages, or DMs. Once you block someone, all direct messages between you and the user you blocked won’t exist in your inbox.

It’s important to note that the person you’ve blocked will still have access to the chat history of old messages. They just won’t be able to send you any new messages. If you unblock them, you won’t regain access to the old messages.

Comments and Likes

When you block someone, their comments and likes won’t be erased. You will still see them on your posts. While the previous and comments will be there, they won’t be able to add new likes or comments to your content.

Stories and Reels

Blocked users won’t be able to see your stories or reels, either. They also won’t be able to interact with previous Reels you’ve posted that are still posted.

Tagging and Mentioning

If you’ve tagged them in a post, blocking them will remove the tag. You also won’t be able to mention each other in posts anymore, or share content. Even if you attempt to do this, it won’t notify the other person which cuts off all forms of direct and indirect communication through Instagram.

Search and Visibility

Blocked Instagram users won’t be able to find your profile anymore. If they remember your username, however, it will show up if they search for it. When they go to your profile page, it will show them your page but with a “no posts” message and “user not found.”

Conclusion

To sum it up, when you block someone on Instagram it will be as if you don’t exist on the app. All forms of communication will be cut off and tags in photos will be removed. If you feel that a user shouldn’t have access to you on the app, you can block them to have control over your privacy.
