What Is Remixing on Instagram?

Published May 20, 2024

Staying up-to-date with the latest features is key to engaging your audience on Instagram. The platform regularly rolls out new features that can change how you and your followers relate.

One feature that has taken the platform by storm is Remixing. Let’s talk about this new and exciting feature and how you can leverage it to create captivating content and expand your reach.

What Are Remixes on Instagram?

Instagram rolled out the Remix feature in March 2021. It was initially restricted to Instagram Reels, but after an update in January 2022, the feature now works on all public videos released after March 2021.

Remixing allows users to create a new Reel that incorporates footage from an existing Reel by another user. Think of it as Instagram’s take on Tiktok’s Duets.

Why Would You Want to Remix a Video?

There are several advantages to utilizing Reels Remixes:

  • Increased Engagement: Remixing a popular video allows you to tap into the audience of the original creator. This can significantly boost your video’s reach and visibility.
  • Spark Creativity and Inspiration: Remixing provides a platform for fresh ideas. You can build upon an existing concept, add your own twist, or offer a comedic response. This will lead to a more dynamic and entertaining experience for viewers.
  • Collaboration Opportunities: Remixing can open doors for collaboration with other creators. You might inspire them to remix your Reels in return, building a sense of community and shared creativity.
  • Exposure to New Audiences: By remixing Reels from creators you admire or aren’t in your niche, you can introduce yourself to their audience and potentially gain new followers.

How to Remix a Video on Instagram

If you’re ready to jump into Remixing, this is how to do it:

  1. Find a Video You Want to Remix: Browse through your Instagram feed or explore Reels using the dedicated Reels tab. Locate a video that inspires you and that allows remixing (indicated by the three dots menu and “Remix” option).
  2. Tap the Remix Button: Click on the three-dot menu at the top right of the chosen Reel and select the “Remix” option in the top center of the menu.
  3. Choose Your Layout: Instagram offers two layout options for your remix. You can choose to have the original Reel play alongside yours in a split-screen format or have your video play right after in a Sequence.
  4. Record Your Remix: Use the recording tools within the Remix feature to capture your video response or select from your camera roll.
  5. Edit Your Remix: You can use the editing tools within Instagram to add music, voiceovers, stickers, and other enhancements to your Remix. Note that you can’t edit the original video. Once you’re done, tap “Next” at the bottom right.
  6. Share Your Remix: Once you’re happy with your creation, share your Remix to your feed or story.

What Reels Can I Remix?

Not all videos on Instagram can be Remixed. Some videos are fair game, while others are off-limits.

  • Public Reels: Anyone on Instagram can remix a public Reel by default.
  • Private Reels: Private reels and feed videos cannot be remixed by default.
  • Videos With Remix Disabled: Within Instagram’s settings, users can disable the ability for others to remix their content.

Remixes are a powerful tool to elevate your Instagram presence. With this feature, you can create engaging content that resonates with a wider audience. So, start Remixing your way to Instagram fame now.
