Today, Instagram, owned by Meta, has over an astonishing 1.4B users around the world who log into the app at least once a month. How did this social media giant get its original start?

When Was Instagram Created?
The official launch date of Instagram was on October 6th, 2010.
On that date, it saw around 25K users sign up for the platform, and its popularity skyrocketed ever since then.
Who Founded Instagram?
While today it is owned by tech conglomerate Meta, the current owner of Facebook, it was initially founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.
Instagram was Kevin’s brainchild. This Stanford graduate also had a stint at Google. He initially called the platform Burbn, named after the famed alcoholic beverage.
The platform was initially inspired by another social media app called Foursquare, along with other location-based apps. The idea Kevin had was that users of the app could take photos, upload them to the platform, and add the locations they were taken at.
After getting funding for his Burbn project, he onboarded the man who would become his co-founder, Mike Krieger. Mike previously had a hand in Meebo, an instant messaging service. When Kevin and Mike joined forces, they targeted their focus on users being able to share photos that were taken on their phones.
Initially, it was quite minimal in its functionality, predominantly focusing on users posting photos, like those photos, and commenting on them.
Within three months of launching, Instagram saw its user base grow from 25K to 1M users. As it continued to grow, it would eventually grow to have 27M users when Facebook reached an agreement with the founders to purchase it for $1B in cash and stock. Just one month later, Facebook itself went public.
That was a short walkthrough of when was Instagram created. As you can see, the social media platform’s growth was exceptional since the start, but it has continued to demonstrate just how innovative it can be to compete with an increasingly crowded field in the world of social media.
