Does TikTok Notify When You Screen Record

Published September 8, 2024

Taking videos others have created and remixing them in different ways has become very popular on TikTok. Some users decide to download videos while others choose to screen record. No matter what your reason for wanting to keep a copy of someone else’s videos, you are probably wondering, “Does TikTok notify when you screen record?”

We will go over how TikTok notifies content creators and whether someone will see that you screen recorded their videos.

Understanding the TikTok Notification System

Before we go any further, it helps to understand how TikTok’s notification system works. As on other social media platforms, users receive notifications whenever others engage with them in some way. These include:

  • Who liked your comment
  • Who commented on your videos
  • Who shared your videos
  • Who followed you

These are the main engagement-related notifications you will receive. Push notifications bring these notifications outside of the app, which means you will even receive engagement notifications when you are not using TikTok. This helps you stay in the loop for all interactions with your account and your content throughout your day.

Note: You will need to give the TikTok special permission to send you push notifications. You can also mute them when desired.

Does TikTok Notify When You Screen Record?

No, TikTok will never notify someone if their content is being screen recorded. TikTok also never notifies content creators when a screenshot is taken.

To test this out, you can either ask a friend to screen record one of your videos or log into another account and do so yourself.

Anyone can screen record any TikTok video on any device that can access the app or website. This means phones, tablets, and computers.

The only time another creator will be notified is if you engage with their content, such as reposting it.

Can You Prevent Screen Recording on TikTok?

Currently, you are unable to prevent others from screen recording your TikTok content. However, you have the option to prevent users from being able to download your TikTok videos. While this is not going to necessarily stop everyone from getting a copy of your content, it can act as a helpful preventative measure that minimizes it.

To disable the ability for others to download your TikTok videos, do the following:

  1. Open the TikTok app
  2. Head to your profile by tapping on the profile icon in the bottom-right of your screen
  3. Tap on the three dots to open the Privacy and settings page
  4. Find and tap on Privacy and Safety
  5. Tap on Safety
  6. Tap on Allowed Download
  7. Disable the ability for users to download your videos here by selecting Off

Note: By default, every TikTok account has downloads Enabled.

Conclusion

Does TikTok notify when you screen record? As you can see, the answer is that no, it will never inform content creators if their videos are being screen recorded. While it is not currently possible to prevent this, you can still disable downloads of your content within your privacy settings. It may not completely stop people from getting copies of your content, but it can definitely reduce the possibility.
